United Donauschwaben Of Milwaukee

Our UDoM Story

Our story began in February 1945, when the organization was founded as the "Tolnauer Komitat Vergnügungsverein" with just 17 members. As Danube Swabian immigrants arrived from Europe in the years that followed, membership and activity grew dramatically. In 1954, the club joined the International Institute and began participating in the Holiday Folk Fair International, sharing our heritage with a wider community. In 1961, the name was updated to the Donauschwaben "Vergnügungsverein" to better reflect our broader regional identity.

During the 1960s, the organization expanded with the creation of key auxiliary groups, including the Kindergruppe and Jugendgruppe, along with other social and sport groups. In 1966, the Donauschwaben Vergnügungsverein and three other Donauschwaben clubs - the Apatiner Verein, the Mucsi Familienverein and the Milwaukee Sport Club - decided to band together and buy a clubhouse. These clubs formed “The United Donauschwaben of Milwaukee, Inc." establishing a shared organization and establishing what became our long-term home until 2023, the Schwabenhof.

Over the following decades, our organization continued to grow as a cultural center for the local German-American community. New groups and traditions were added, and the UDoM became an active part of major regional celebrations such as German Fest in Milwaukee.

Since the early 2000s, membership and engagement have continued to strengthen. The organization has evolved while preserving its cultural mission, supported by youth, cultural, and community programs that keep traditions alive across generations. In 2003, our current name, “The United Donauschwaben of Milwaukee, Inc.”, was put into effect. Through our organization, the German-American Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established.

Today, the United Donauschwaben of Milwaukee remains dedicated to preserving and celebrating Danube Swabian heritage. Through events, performances, and community involvement, each generation continues to carry forward the traditions of those who came before us. As we continue on into the future, it is important to always remember that the success and future of the UDoM is dependent on the willingness and dedication to the preservation of our culture, traditions and past. Come to any of our events and it is easy to see how the next generation of Donauschwaben - those born and bred in this country - are proud to carry on the traditions of our forefathers.

If you are interested in joining one of our dance groups or becoming a member of our club, please don't hesitate to reach out. We would love to hear from you!
